While most people dedicate time and resources preparing their money for their heirs, we believe in spending equal time and resources on preparing heirs for the money.

When asked why they hired us, one client stated, “For back-up! I know you know as much about my financial situation and family as I do.” Our team members have an average of 20+ years of experience in planning to transfer wealth and values to future generations. In addition to working with family members to craft the most appropriate and effective plan for their needs and goals, Greenway is often involved in an advisory capacity to the trustee or family executor to carry out the terms of an estate plan.

One of the blessings of having excess capital is the ability to use it to help others or support a cause or initiative. We believe strongly in the virtue of philanthropy – it can not only change the communities in which our families live, but change family members themselves as they become involved in the organizations they support. There are many ways to accomplish this, and an overall philanthropic strategy is key in developing the policy and structure to implement of the family’s vision.

Multi-Generational Planning

As any family knows, not everyone finds value in the same thing; not everyone works in the family business; not everyone has the same talents – but they all expect to be treated “fairly” in whatever plans are made for their future. This is particularly true when large sums and complex entities are involved. Finding a solution that treats each member fairly while respecting their individual nature is the focus of multi-generational governance.

In most families of great wealth, the younger generation is well provided for, well educated and groomed with an eye toward participating in family financial decisions once they reach an appropriate age. But in many cases, young members may be overwhelmed by the prospect of their upcoming duties, or engage in foolish or destructive behaviors. To counteract this destructive force, Greenway provides educational sessions to young adults and beneficiaries to take the mystery and fear out of responsible wealth management. Sessions are based upon the age and requirements of each family beneficiary group, and are designed to take the confusion out of things to come, as well as educate and empower them with tools to handle the road ahead.

Fundamentally, our goal is to create the basis for family harmony, purpose, and joy. While focused daily on the financial aspects impacting the family, we are equally committed to seeing that the family itself stays intact and that its members are able to enjoy each other and the blessings that money can’t buy.
